Waste Generation

There is a well-established link between individuals' wealth/income and their rate of waste generation. The figure below depicts how eight countries differ in their waste culture on the basis of a comparison of annual generation rate of waste and gross domestic product (GDP) per head.

Almost invariably, a country's income is one of the key factors affecting the strategy employed to treat such waste materials. Many of the less developed countries do not regard waste as a resource for the creation of value-added products; rather, they consider waste as simply an issue that requires disposal. As a result, most of their waste budgets are spent on collecting the waste. This strategy leads to many issues when it comes to disposing of the material collected and, consequently, generates problems that in most cases are extremely difficult to resolve.

Waste Processing 

Generally speaking, waste can be processed through three main pathways – reuse, recycling or recovery. The fourth alternative is landfill. It is the recovery pathway that gives rise to the production of energy and/or chemicals. The recovery-based concepts of waste-to-energy and waste-to-chemicals can be achieved via thermochemical, biochemical or mechanical means.
